i'm not sure if you guys know what polyphasic sleep is, but here's a run down of it, and the different types of polyphasic sleep. then i'll go on to talk about my first day:
Polyphasic sleep is the practice of sleeping multiple times in one 24 hour day in short periods. Monophasic sleeping is what most of the world is used to (sleeping between 7 and 12 hours every night). Polyphasic sleepers sleep anywhere from 20 minutes to 1-3 hours at a time multiple times a day. This is done to save time throughout the day, or adjust to a harsh work schedule.
Popular types of polyphasic sleeping include:
Everyman - Consists of a core sleep during the "normal" sleeping hours of either 1.5 hours or 3 hours, and 2-3 20 minute naps spaced throughout the day.
Uberman - Consists of 6 20-minute naps spaced 4 hours apart, through the day. Some people extend this to 25 or 30 minutes, depending on their circadian rhythm.
Dymaxion - 4 30-minute naps, taken every 6 hours. This is what I'm doing. Some people extend this to 45 minutes or one hour each, but I view this as a waste of time, and not necessary. Sleep is a bad habit!
Biphasic - Consists of 4-6 hours of sleep at night, and a mid-afternoon nap of 20-30 minutes.
Free-running - This type of Polyphasic sleep includes sleeping whenever you want for however long, multiple times a day. However, this type of sleep doesn't allow for routine and makes the body very, very sleep deprived and there is nobody who has done this type of sleep for an extended period of time.
-----------------
I just took my first nap from 8:30-9pm daylight savings time (normally pacific time) tonight! i have been very tired all day from waking up at 6, so a nap did my brain + body good. i woke up and felt as if i were on fire, but that feeling went away, as well as the initial drowsiness normally felt upon waking up, and now i'm pumped full of energy!
hopefully my lit teacher will let me make use of her room during lunch, so that i can take a nap. otherwise, i may have to bend my sleep schedule. you see.... i'm at school from 7:30am til about 3:30pm, give or take a half an hour. that's about 8 hours, which would definitely ruin my dymaxion sleep schedule (especially while i'm trying to get used to it!)
thus far, i see my schedule as such:
5:30am-6am
12pm-12:30pm
6pm-6:30pm
12am-12:30am.
I may need to switch my schedule around, depending on how my family is doing things and how often i am able to actually meet those guidelines. for right now, that seems reasonable.... but since my nap was 8:30 to 9.... that might offset things. potentially 3:30pm to 4, 8:30pm to 9, 5:30am to 6, and 12pm to 12:30? that would make my "night watch" (the chunk of time when i'm awake in the night) very long (8 hours) which I'm not sure I could handle. Hm. Thoughts, anybody?
